Ellen Foster is a great book.   However, it may be a little tough to grasp the writing style of Kaye Gibbons right off the bat.  A lot happens through flashback, and a lot happens right 'now.'  There two stories of Ellen then and now are told concurrently.  A skipped line signals a shift in time.  Pay clsoe attention and note what is happening to the old Ellen and the new Ellen.
